You cannot maintain a healthy life into your 70's and beyond without regular physical activity. There are many benefits to incorporating intense activity into your lifestyle, but you will benefit from leisurely activities like walking consistently as well. The key here is finding physical activity that you enjoy so that you can continue with these activities regularly throughout life. You do not need to choose the newest exercise fad, you need to keep moving every day.
Recent research demonstrated that leisurely activity (like walking) for an average of 7 hours per week kept the heart, lungs and muscles of >70 year olds in similar condition to that found in 40 year olds. Add occasional intense activity to provide even more benefit and improve your health!
